Project Overview

Laboratorio de Cine is UAT's (Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas) film program under FADYCS, spanning a formal academic course, an extracurricular cine club, and a hands-on production crew, with a history of institutional partnerships and awards dating back to 2003. The program had no digital presence before this project. I worked as UI/UX designer and front end developer, in collaboration with Axcan.

Problem
Laboratorio de Cine's model spans three distinct programs (a required course, an extracurricular club, and a production crew) serving students with very different levels of involvement, alongside a long history of institutional partnerships and achievements. Without a digital presence, there was no way to communicate this structure clearly, or to give each type of student a clear path toward the level of involvement that matched their interest.
Goals
  • Establish the program's first digital presence
  • Clearly differentiate the three programs (course, club, crew) so each type of student could find their own path
  • Showcase the program's institutional history, partnerships, and awards to build credibility
  • Deliver both design and front end implementation
Key insights
  • Not every student wants the same level of involvement, someone taking the required course has a very different need than someone looking to join the production crew, so treating all three programs as one generic offering would have underserved both
  • A long institutional history and list of partnerships is a credibility asset that needed its own dedicated presentation, not a brief mention, since it's what differentiates an established program from a new one
  • With no prior digital presence and no dedicated research budget, structure had to be grounded in the institution's existing identity and content rather than new discovery work
User profile
Three primary audiences: students taking the required course as part of their degree, students seeking extracurricular involvement through the cine club, and students seeking hands-on production experience through the cine crew. A secondary audience includes external visitors interested in the program's short films, history, or institutional partnerships.
Main user flow

The experience guides visitors to:

  1. Understand the program's structure and identify which of the three offerings (course, club, crew) matches their interest
  2. Explore relevant content, such as short films, history, or partnerships, based on their interest
  3. Reach out directly through WhatsApp for the specific program they want to join
UX & UI decisions
  • Information architecture organized around three distinct student paths (course, club, crew), each with its own dedicated content and call to action
  • Dedicated historical timeline and partnerships section to showcase institutional credibility
  • Direct WhatsApp contact paths for each program, reducing friction for students ready to get involved
  • Full front end implementation to bring the design to production, grounded in the university's existing institutional identity
Outcome
The website gave Laboratorio de Cine its first digital presence, translating a multi-program structure spanning academic, extracurricular, and production involvement into a site where each type of student could find their own path. The program's institutional history and partnerships were given dedicated presentation to build credibility with visitors unfamiliar with the program's track record. Following launch, monthly site traffic increased by 20%, and Professor Rosales, who oversees the program, noted that the site gave Laboratorio de Cine greater visibility and a stronger space to share its work with the wider community.
