Project Overview

PediaHealth is a mobile app designed to support pediatricians during patient consultations, including a drug database and dosage calculation tools. The app's original version was published on Google Play and has reached over 5,000 downloads. I later led a redesign effort, working independently, grounded in research sessions with 5 real pediatricians to address usability issues identified in that original version. This redesign was not implemented into production.

Problem
Calculating a pediatric drug dosage depends on multiple factors at once, including the patient's age, weight, and height. Research sessions with pediatricians revealed that this calculation process was slow and effortful in the existing app, creating friction at exactly the moment it needed to be fastest: during a live consultation with a patient present.
Goals
  • Reduce the time and cognitive effort required to calculate an accurate pediatric dosage
  • Design a calculation flow that accounts for multiple patient variables (age, weight, height) without adding steps
  • Keep the tool usable in the context it's actually used in: a live consultation, not a quiet moment of research
  • Validate design decisions directly with practicing pediatricians
Research
Research was conducted through sessions with 5 practicing pediatricians, using the app in the context of their real workflow. These sessions surfaced that dosage calculation, dependent on interacting variables like weight, age, and height, was the primary point of friction in the existing app, taking longer than appropriate for a live patient consultation.
Key insights
  • Dosage calculation needed to be treated as the app's core task, not a secondary feature, since it was the specific moment where pediatricians lost time during a consultation
  • A calculation flow with multiple dependent variables (age, weight, height) required careful sequencing to stay fast, adding fields without rethinking the flow would have made the problem worse, not better
  • Because the tool is used in front of a patient, speed wasn't just a convenience, it directly affected the quality of the interaction between doctor and patient
User profile
Primary users are practicing pediatricians who need to calculate accurate, patient-specific drug dosages quickly during live consultations. Their main constraint isn't a lack of knowledge, it's the time pressure of doing that calculation correctly while a patient is present.
Main user flow

The redesigned experience guided pediatricians to:

  1. Enter the patient's relevant variables (age, weight)
  2. Receive a fast, accurate dosage calculation without extra navigation steps
  3. Reference drug information as needed, without leaving the consultation flow
UX & UI decisions
  • Dosage calculation redesigned as the app's primary, fastest-to-reach task
  • Input flow restructured to handle multiple dependent variables without adding friction
  • Interface simplified for use during a live consultation, not extended review
  • Drug database kept accessible without competing with the core dosage flow
Outcome
Research with 5 practicing pediatricians identified dosage calculation, specifically the interaction between age, weight, etc. as the primary source of friction in the app's original version. The redesign addressed this directly by restructuring the calculation flow to be faster without sacrificing accuracy. This redesign was not implemented into production, so no adoption or usage data is available for it specifically. The app's original version, which predates this redesign work, has been published on Google Play and reached over 5,000 downloads.
