Project Overview

Hotel Posada de Tampico is a hotel offering rooms, event spaces, and dining, whose previous website had usability issues that made the booking and information experience difficult for guests. I led the redesign, covering both design and front end development.

Problem
The previous site's poor user experience made it difficult for visitors to find information about rooms, events, and services, and to complete a reservation with confidence. For a hotel, where the reservation flow is the primary conversion action, usability friction at any step directly risks losing a booking to a competitor.
Goals
  • Improve overall usability through a heuristics-based audit of the existing site
  • Simplify the reservation flow, including date and guest search
  • Clearly present rooms, event spaces, dining, and amenities
  • Deliver both design and front end implementation
Research
A UX audit was conducted using Nielsen's usability heuristics, identifying where the previous site's design and navigation were creating friction for guests trying to find information or complete a reservation.
Key insights
  • The heuristic audit identified concrete usability breakdowns in the previous site that were likely costing bookings, not just creating minor annoyance, since reservation is the site's single most important conversion action
  • A hotel's website needs to build confidence at every step of the reservation flow, guests comparing options are unlikely to push through a confusing date or guest search rather than simply booking elsewhere
  • Presenting rooms, events, and amenities clearly wasn't just about aesthetics, it directly supports a guest's decision to book by answering their practical questions upfront
User profile
Primary users are prospective guests evaluating room availability, rates, and amenities, who need a clear and trustworthy path to completing a reservation, along with visitors researching the hotel for events or dining.

The experience guides visitors to:

  3. Complete a reservation with minimal friction

Outcome
The redesign addressed usability issues identified through a Nielsen heuristics audit, restructuring the reservation flow and information architecture to reduce friction at the point where guests decide to book. The site is live and in active use, though analytics access wasn't provided by the client, so no post-launch metrics are available to confirm impact directly.
